Charging speed: tips, tricks, and myths
Many of us have encountered it: you just got your new (to you) EV, try out a fast charger, and find that your charging speed is lower than expected. But charging speed isn't just about the charger. It's also about your car and your charging habits. We're here to give you some tips and tricks, and bust some myths about the charging speed of EVs.
🔋 Battery temperature
If your battery is cold (or too hot), charging slows down. Just like Goldilocks, your EV charges faster when the temperatures are just right. Check if your EV lets you precondition your battery, which can save you time and help your speed.
Optimal temperatures are different for each vehicle. We see optimal results when the outside temperature is above 20ºC.
📈 Charge curves
Do you notice that your phone charges slower after about 80%? The same goes for EVs. That is because your EV is trying to protect your battery and keep it ready for years worth of adventures and road trips. We recommend charging your EV up to 80% — that gives you more than enough battery to hit the road and helps keep your charge speed on point. The maximum charging speed typically reduces as the battery gets charged.
The maximum charging speed advertised by brands is often only realistic when your battery percentage is very low, and when it is warm outside. Have a look at our charging speed page, where we publish charge curves for most vehicles.
🚘 Your car has a speed limit too
If your car tops out at 100 kW or 150 kW, that’s your max — even if the charger can do more. In the Fastned app, you can check your car's stats, along with its maximum charging speed in kW.
You can still use a charger that tops your vehicle's specs. The vehicle decides the charging speed, so it's always safe!
Charging smarter, means charging faster. When you do, Fastned doesn’t just feel fast, it is fast. And with the right setup, your charge stop might be over before you can finish your coffee.
